iLEAD Hybrid Learners Focus on the Future: Habit 3 — Put First Things First!
At iLEAD Hybrid, learners discover that leadership starts from within. As part of our commitment to social-emotional learning, we implement Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Our current focus is Habit 3: Put First Things First.
What Is Habit 3?
If Habit 1 is “I’m in charge” and Habit 2 is “Have a plan,” Habit 3 is “Work first, then play.” It’s all about learning how to prioritize what matters most—goals, family, and health—before getting distracted by the small stuff.
How We Practice It at iLEAD Hybrid
- Project Management: Learners practice breaking big projects into smaller steps and tackling core milestones first.
- Time Tracking: We guide learners in using agendas and visual tools to manage their daily schedules.
- Focus & Boundaries: Learners discover how to set aside distractions so they can get key tasks done efficiently.
3 Quick Ways to Practice Habit 3 at Home
- “Big Rocks” First: Use the classic jar analogy! Remind kids to place their “big rocks” (projects, reading, chores) in their day before filling the rest with “sand” (screen time, games).
- Weekly Family Priorities: Map out two or three non-negotiable family priorities each week (like family dinner or outdoor time) and schedule them first.
- Distraction-Free Zones: Create a quiet space at home so focused work get done faster, leaving plenty of stress-free downtime afterward.
When kids learn to prioritize early, they gain self-discipline, reduce stress, and build confidence that lasts a lifetime.
